About me

Meet the Person Behind Syed Q Mentoring

For more than 25 years, people have come to me to talk about the things that matter most in their lives. Sometimes it has been a difficult relationship or marriage, a disagreement with parents or children, a loss of confidence, or simply feeling uncertain about which direction to take. At other times, it has been a dream they wanted to pursue, a business they hoped to build, or a decision they needed the courage to make. Long before I established Syed Q Mentoring, listening to people and helping them find a way forward was a natural part of my life.

Syed, founder of Syed Q Mentoring

I have never believed that everyone needs the same advice. Each person brings their own circumstances, values, responsibilities and experiences. I take time to listen, understand their point of view, ask thoughtful questions and, when appropriate, challenge ideas that may be holding them back. I have seen people develop confidence, make important changes and move towards personal and business goals. Their achievements are their own; I value having played a supportive part in the journey.

Over the years, I have owned and run businesses and shared practical advice with others who wanted to establish or develop theirs. I understand that personal decisions, family responsibilities, financial pressures and ambitions are often connected. My experience has helped me offer grounded conversations about both everyday challenges and longer-term goals.

My work with the Ministry of Justice has brought me into family and criminal court environments and involved me in more than 600 cases over the years, covering a wide range of difficult and sensitive circumstances. That experience reinforced the importance of listening carefully, treating people impartially, respecting confidentiality and recognising that there is often more than one perspective to a situation. My role was not to make judicial decisions or determine case outcomes.

I have also spent many years helping people across local communities, from a wide variety of backgrounds. This has included supporting individuals and families to understand practical issues, communicate with organisations, navigate difficult situations and feel more confident about the next steps available to them. I have learned as much from these encounters as I hope others have learned from me.

Travel has been another important part of how I have come to understand people. I have visited more than 22 countries, often deliberately choosing to spend time living alongside local people rather than simply visiting tourist attractions. I have shared their homes, meals, routines and conversations, walked with them and listened to their stories. Seeing ordinary life through different eyes has taught me to question assumptions and appreciate the many ways people experience the world.

I was born and raised in Britain and have always enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. Away from coaching, I enjoy watching football, playing badminton, watching films and spending time with family and friends. But what has shaped me most is human connection. Helping others is something I genuinely enjoy; it has strengthened my character and given me a deeper understanding of myself as well as the people around me.

I do not claim that 25 years of informal support makes me a clinically qualified therapist or that I have every answer. What I offer through Syed Q Mentoring is real-life experience, careful listening, honest conversation and encouragement to take practical steps. My approach is simple: Listen • Understand • Challenge • Encourage • Move Forward.

Listen  Â·  Understand  Â·  Challenge  Â·  Encourage  Â·  Move Forward

Professional standards and safeguarding awareness

My professional experience has involved sensitive circumstances where discretion, safeguarding awareness, respect and clear boundaries matter. I have undertaken relevant safeguarding-related training and developed professional working practices through public-facing roles and work connected with the Ministry of Justice. I aim to provide a respectful, non-judgemental coaching environment, explain confidentiality and its limits clearly, and recognise when someone may need support beyond the scope of life coaching.
